since there is no comment yet on this unusual formation i will get it going, this strongly resembles what pep played yesterday in the UCL quarters first leg at home against bayern

the wide midfielders a bit more narrow than shown here, basically it is a cruijff 343 diamond, with the diamond rotated into a 2-2 shape and the wingers more defensive and narrow smile

cheers

I ve always found it wild how Pep s teams -- this Man City side and Barca often -- harken back to the ancient WM formation with this 3241 which for me is more like a 3223.

But, yeah, the 3313 and 3133 Ajax of the 90s are for me the most beautiful team ever to watch

It's not an openly used formation but I love the 3-2-4-1 nature of it with 2 holding midfielders and two number 10s just behind a center forward with wingbacks .For Example , I would play Kante- Enzo as double six and play Mount and Felix as dounle 10 behind a center in the mould of Halaand with Reece James & Chilwell as Wingbacks. It's worth experimenting.

Just discovered this site, good posts and personal critiques.

For me, the formation 3-2-4-1 has been a variation in managing...off any back three line or variation thereof. It is part of a grouping of tactical alignments as the ball moves up and down the field. The 3-4-3 is the most balanced form when dispersed evenly with the field, but opponents move and so does a match ball. Therefore, as we like to remind ourselves...constant shifting, sets and resets...the game is fluid.

The 3-2-4-1 is very much a variation of the
"magic box" formation from the 1950's, maybe earlier... today, say a 3-Box-2-1 (3-2-2W-2-1)...simply moving a back line position to a top line position and creating more of a single wide line for attacking front line of W/S/W, where midi w's are to support single striker up top.

At any time, the attack could be a 3-2-2W-3, where AM #10's move up as wingers to give a paired wing...or the W's move up wings with AM #10's pinching to interior between S#9 and midi wingers.

Defending is various too...deep pressure could be a 5-4-1 or 5-3-2 or 5-5-0, ouch.

Personally, dabbling a 3-2-1-4 variation playing off a 3-5-2 (3-4-1-2 / 3-1-4-2 shifts into attack or 3-1-4-2 shifts into high press).

Of course, a tactical manager builds around the team's strengths.

Ok, from my point of view "tactically", this formation has some flexibility. For Instance:

1----1-2-2-2W-2-1 allows for an interior rectangle of 6, w/ winger support between the attacking Box4 of the Rec6. If more width needed in back end,

1----3-2-2W-2-1 allows for a Trap5 w/ flanks and support wingers.

Depending on form and structure, the lineup can create a space in front of opposition back line, that if utilized properly, is a sharp tool for press, dispossess then attack. The half space allowed is a sorta bait to play ball into the zone which creates an opportunity for pressing from all directions, which to a player is like the walls closing in, so get out...

... the press is aided by the fact that the attacking Box4 front two + wingers can dictate how vertical to set the half space open zone.

switching to 1-3-2-1-4 against opponents who drop back-line for wide-back build-up from goalkeeper or resets, this forces gk or backend flanks to likely play an air ball into mid zone, creating 50/50 chance opponent is dispossessed, and a quick counter-strike is available.

Attackers only need press, defend pass lanes to force over-the-top air balls or less controllable low passes that bounce, deflect or come in hot.
